Ninety-one participants (84 male, seven female) were recruited initially from a sixth-form college in Merseyside, UK. One male participant reported that he had never consumed alcohol so he was excluded from the analyses, leaving a final total of 90, all of whom had consumed alcohol at least once in the past 6 months. All participants were between 16 and 18 years of age ( years, ). Eighty-nine participants were aged either 16 or 17 years (and were therefore below the legal age to purchase alcohol in the United Kingdom), whereas only one participant was aged 18. In order to take part in the study, participants had to have normal or corrected to normal colour vision (i.e. they could not take part if colour-blind), and they had to be fluent English speakers. The study received ethical approval from the Ethics Committee in the School of Psychology at the University of Liverpool, and also from the head teacher of the college.
